Football for Change: Sebei Regional Tournaments Unite Communities Against GBV
The Sebei Sub-region is taking a stand against gender-based violence (GBV) through the power of football. Recent regional tournaments across Kapchorwa, Kween, and Bukwo have brought communities together, using sports as a platform to raise awareness, inspire change, and promote gender equality.
Football as a Tool for Social Impact
With GBV being a critical issue in the region, these tournaments go beyond the game. They are a movement for change, engaging men, women, and youth in education, advocacy, and community action.

Tournament Structure & Activities
- Community teams compete in a regional championship
- Pre-match awareness sessions on GBV, led by experts
- Post-match discussions featuring testimonies and advocacy messages
- Winning teams pledge to promote GBV prevention initiatives in their communities
Engaging the Community
These tournaments have drawn massive support from local leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and sports personalities. By blending sports and education, the initiative encourages open dialogue and empowers victims to speak out and seek justice.
Beyond the Game: The Impact
The tournament is not just about winning trophies—it’s about creating a long-term cultural shift. Former and current football stars from the region have mentored young players and reinforced the message that violence has no place in our society.
What’s Next?
Due to the overwhelming success of this initiative, plans are underway to make it an annual event, with expanded outreach to schools, football academies, and grassroots community groups.
